FUJIFILM Healthcare and Source LDPath collaborate to streamline Digital Pathology workflows and accelerate diagnostic reporting

FUJIFILM Healthcare UK, a global leader in Digital Pathology software¹, and Source LDPath, part of Source BioScience UK Ltd, have collaborated to streamline Histology reporting workflows through automation. This collaboration underpins an efficient process for external case review, helping to reduce turnaround times (TATs) and support faster, more streamlined Digital Pathology diagnosis.

The implementation of this fully automated, digital outsourcing workflow from SYNAPSE® Pathology, in conjunction with Source LDPath, an industry-leading provider of diagnostic and Histopathology services’, first launched in the UK at one of our mutual customer sites back in May 2025, with several other implementations following this success.

The aim of this collaboration is to help address the pressures facing the NHS with the global shortage of Pathologists, as well as the growing number of cancer patients and the TATs expected of healthcare practitioners. This is aligned to the NHS UK Histology reporting target of 98% of all reports being made available within 10 days².

Fujifilm and Source LDPath’s digital outsourcing workflow enables Histopathology cases to be reviewed and reported more efficiently, helping to reduce turnaround times as recorded below:

“From my personal experience in the Histology laboratory, I know firsthand the daily manual effort required to manage the analogue outsourcing of glass slides. The impact this collaboration of a digital ecosystem provides, firstly to the patient with reduced waiting time for their results, to the eradication of physical laboratory efforts. This time saving workflow results in a multitude of benefits including the potential cost reduction, reduces the risk of damage to slides and environmental impact with the reduction of packaging and transportation, it really is transformational!”

Kayleigh Patterson, Product & Release Manager – Digital Pathology, Fujifilm Healthcare UK

With the World Health Organization (WHO) projecting that annual cancer cases worldwide will rise to nearly 35 million by 2050, compared with an estimated 20.6 million new cases annually in 2024, representing a substantial increase in the global cancer burden⁴. As the number of cancer cases continues to rise, so too will the demand for Pathology services. However, the Pathology workforce is already under significant pressure, with demand for pathology services rising faster than the supply of trained pathologists. The Royal College of Pathologists’ 2025 Workforce Census found that 78% of pathologists do not believe current staffing levels are adequate to meet growing demand⁵.

Digitisation with solutions such as SYNAPSE® Pathology have been proven to deliver digital images for diagnosis 1.7 hours faster than glass slides⁶. While the adoption of digital pathology for primary histology diagnosis is reported at 31% in the UK⁷, the advancement of wider benefits, including outsourcing, aims to drive further implementation throughout the UK.

“Together, Source LDPath and Fujifilm Healthcare are redefining the future of diagnostics, combining cutting-edge Digital Pathology with advanced imaging technologies to accelerate turnaround times, enhance accuracy, and streamline diagnostic workflows. This powerful partnership is not just about speed; it’s about delivering timely, life-changing insights that empower clinicians and prioritise what matters most: better outcomes for patients.”

Nicholas Bills, Healthcare Director, Source LDPath

We look forward to sharing more about the collaboration between these two leading companies, helping to drive quicker turnaround times for staff, and enabling better, more efficient patient care.
