Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest cancer killer. Nearly 43,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in the UK. Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable and curable cancers when caught early. The earlier it is found, the more effective treatments are and the greater the chance of cure.
FIT Testing
How does the FIT Test work?
The FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) is a simple stool test that can be done at home. A small sample is collected and sent to our laboratory, where it is analysed for occult (hidden) blood in the stool.
Traces of blood can be an early warning sign of:
- Bowel cancer or colon cancer
- Polyps
- Colitis
- Diverticulitis
Clinical Value
In the early stages, these conditions may not cause symptoms. The FIT test can detect changes before they become more serious, making regular testing very important. The FIT test is widely used by the NHS to screen people over 50 for bowel cancer. However, more than 2,600 people under 50 are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year in the UK. These individuals fall outside the current NHS screening programme and are often only diagnosed once symptoms arise.
- Early detection matters: nearly everyone survives bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage.
- Late diagnosis reduces survival: survival rates drop significantly once the disease has advanced.
