Virology

Viruses are tiny infectious agents that carry their own genetic material, either as DNA or RNA. Once inside the body, they invade healthy cells and use them to replicate and spread. By analysing fragments of viral genetic material, molecular virology can identify which virus is present, how it behaves, and whether it carries mutations that affect treatment response.

What is Molecular Virology Testing?

Viruses lack the cellular machinery to replicate independently and must hijack the functions of a host cell to reproduce their genetic material. Fragments of viral RNA or DNA can be isolated from clinical samples such as plasma, serum, or swabs and amplified millions of times to allow detection and analysis. By sequencing these genetic fragments and comparing specific gene regions against reference databases, molecular virologists can identify viral subtypes and mutations associated with drug resistance, guiding effective treatment strategies.

Value of Virology Testing

  • Guides personalised HIV treatment
  • Detects emerging drug resistance early
  • Enables selection of the most effective antiretroviral combinations
  • Improves safety of therapy choices
  • Supports complex case management
  • Monitors viral evolution and treatment efficacy
  • Delivers precision diagnostics with high sensitivity

What Viral Tests do we Offer?

Viral Resistance: Comprehensive HIV-1 Drug Resistance Testing

  • HIV-1 PRRT resistance profile: Comprehensive sequencing of the full PR-RT gene and analysis of drug resistance to protease and reverse transcriptase inhibitors from plasma samples.
  • Integrase resistance profile: Comprehensive sequencing of the integrase gene and analysis of drug resistance to integrase inhibitors from plasma samples.
  • Tropism by genotype: Genetic analysis of the V3 region, analysing resistance to CCR5 antagonist therapy from plasma samples.

HLA-B*57:01 Testing

Detection from whole blood of patients displaying HLA B*57:01 polymorphism associated with abacavir sensitivity.

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

  • HIV Monitoring of drug levels in the blood before, during, or after drug treatment covering all current anti-HIV drugs. For most drugs, interpretation is available for trough cases and in some drugs for non-trough sampling.
  • Hepatitis Drug level values in the blood before, during or after drug treatment. This is provided as a drug level only service.
